One of the hardest rules to come up with an animation for was the straight ahead and pose to pose. It was hard to think of an idea that would demenstrate it as a finished product rather than a tutorial. The easiest to come up with an idea for was staging. As a theather student, I am already familiar with the concept of staging since it is something you have to be aware about while performing to an audience. Since I was already familiar with this concept it was much easier to come up with an idea for. I did not enjoy doing this project. As much as I like animation, it was frustrating for me to work with stop motion since it is a very tedious process and I had to start over quite a few times so that I could make some work out. Planning out precisely where things go was difficult, and I did not enjoy that process of putting it together.
Squash and Strech: A ball dropping down and bursting like a water balloon (transparancies) Straight ahead and Pose to pose: A drawing coming together (color pencil) Follow through and overlapping: Hair blowing in the wind (chalk) Secondary action: a stick figure tripping (whiteboard) Exageration: Solid Drawing: Fish swimming through the ocean (transperencies) Appeal: nerdy Cartoon character with exaggerated features
This is Cheese, Egg's long lost sister. She comes from a different clan of box trolls that live in a different town. She was lost a couple years before Eggs.
I wanted to make a character that resembled the character design for Eggs (which is why I made them related). I am more drawn to Egg's thin and long features so I wanted to use similar one's for Cheese. I used lots of different layers and colors to slowly color in the character. If I could change anything about it, it would be the way that the colors work with eachother, I had a hard time making this character look more cartoony so it took me a while to just get it to this level. It was really difficult sometimes to make the dimensions match up sometimes I had a hard time lining things up occasionally. I think eventually in the end, everything came together pretty well. I like that I was able to make sure everything was connected and still keep the essentials of logo. I remember making a lot of keychains and band logos in drafting 1, so I decided to take the My Chemical Romance logo and make it into a keychain.
1. Movie: The BoxTrolls 2. Production Company: Laika 3. BoxTrolls was produced by the Laika company, an animation company that uses mixed media to create their stop motion films. They use a combination of old stop motion techniques and new technological innovations. They make things by hand, 3D print, make puppets, and use computers and programs to create films. 4. Jeff Riley is one of the lead animators at Laika. He has worked on other films from the Laika company such as Paranorman and Caroline. He does a lot of the stop motion work after all of the sets and pieces have been put together. 5. Laika was able to work with more colors with their 3D printing. This allowed them to use lighter and more realistic tones in their color scheme. 6. I had already seen this movie a couple years ago when it first came out, and I remember enjoying the story. I decided to watch it again so that I could appreciate it more this time, knowing more about the all the work that goes into making a stop motion film. I was very frustrated with this program. Since it was a program that I had not used before, it was a little difficult to get used to. I like the idea of making digital paintings, however I definitely need more experience with this program. I think the the color in this shape turned out well and the way that I wanted it to. I would have liked for the lines to turn out a little better and I would have liked to understand what was going on with them, because I was drawing lines that I didn't realize I was drawing.
